Craving Forbidden Anthology
-- SNEAK PEEKS: “On My Honeymoon” by Evan Grace We reach my bungalow and the bellhop carries my luggage into the bedroom and then quickly shows me around and telling me where everything is. I hand him a tip and then shut the door behind him. I kick off my shoes and then walk around the space, I’m in awe at the pure beauty of this place. There are a set of double doors in the bedroom that when I push them open I gasp. The view is breathtaking. It’s blue as far as the eye can see. I move to the end of the deck, a light breezes blows the loose strands of my hair all around me. I walk to the stairs that lead right into the water, and sit down on the top step. I tilt my head back, and close my eyes, letting the sun beat down on me. When I stand up I find my neighbor standing on his deck as well. It’s the man from the plane. He’s wearing a white linen shirt, khaki shorts and he’s barefoot. I hurry inside before he catches me gawking at him. For my first night I decide to just stay in, and relax. When I finally slip into the huge tub I sigh because it’s heavenly. While I soak I begin to analyze my relationship with Alex. It wasn’t perfect, but I thought we were happy. -- “Crossing Jordan” by Ryan Jo Summers Fifteen minutes later, Jordan stood in the produce section of Cimarron Shores’ grocery store, studying tomatoes. A salad sounded good with her dinner. Beefsteak or cherry? Selecting two ripe beefsteak, she moved on to lettuce. Romaine or iceberg? A movement two rows over caught her eye, then a smile crossed her face as her heart skipped a couple of beats and warmth pulsed through her. Will pushed a cart slowly along the apple and pear aisle, a confused look on his face. She had to admit, it looked cute on him. So did the tight, gray ARMY t-shirt under his untucked flannel shirt and painted-on blue jeans. Umm-umm. If they used him in their recruitment posters, ladies would be flocking to enlist in the Army. “Hey, Will,” she greeted as their carts almost bumped. “Fancy meeting you here.” Please don’t let him be scared off by Derek too. She found she was holding her breath. A blush touched his stubble-roughened cheeks and he waved a long list clutched in his hand. “Hi. I’m trying to help Grams and Mom with their weekly shopping. Grams gave me a detailed list.” He shook the paper again. “But she left a lot of the details out.” Jordan couldn’t help but smile at his clear confusion. Poor guy probably didn’t shop much—at least not for a café like The White Orchid. She liked his sheepish grin, enjoying how it made her toes curl and butterflies to take off in her stomach. She sucked in a deep breath to steady herself and gripped the cart handle. Then she moved around the cart so they stood hip to hip. She breathed in his woodsy aftershave. He smelled so masculine. And sexy. “Maybe I can help. I’m pretty good at shopping.” She eyed his cart. He didn’t have anything in there but a loaf of bread. He extended the list, relief on his face. “Granny Smith apples. Six pounds,” she read. “What detail did she leave out for that?” Will shook his head. “Grams isn’t a Smith. She was a Mead before she married Gramps and became a Larkin. So who is Granny Smith and what does she have to do with apples?” Jordan swallowed her giggle, hiding behind brushing her knuckles over her chin. “That’s a type of apple, usually used for baking because they have a tart flavor.” She waved her hand to the signs over the apple bins. The light flickered above Will’s head as he scanned the names. “I’ll be,” he said slowly, more color flushing his cheeks. He turned back to Jordan, that sexy boyish grin playing over his lips. “You must think I’m a real dunce.” She thought he was real cute, and a strong desire to kiss him stole over her. GIVEAWAY!

However, I came to the decision because my fiancé was struggling with his MS, and sometimes when things that heavy are going on in your life, you need an outlet. So, that’s just what I did. I started with just writing poems, which turned into short stories, then what do you know…a whole book! Trust me, I’m no genius! Some may think, “My goodness she’s got a foul mouth!” Especially anyone that knows me, but what can I say, I must’ve been a sailor in my past life! Cam Johns started writing as a way to cope with her fiancé’s Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis. Her quiet journey started with poems and short stories which she kept private. Frank J. Edler
My mother was an alien and my father was a lamp post. I was fed a steady dose of soap bars as a child as punishment for my foul mouth and incessant pranks. Little did anyone know the soap only made me stronger, faster, more agile. My brain filled with bubbles that were 99.9% pure. It was an amazing time. I left the city and moved out to the country where I heard tell there is an amazing banana bread store. I never found it, but I did find love. I loved that tuna sandwich like no other and we were married on the Fourth of July, just like Tom Cruise in that one movie about said date. It was a magical time but alas was not meant to be. I ate it. I tried to move on, writing books and sharing them with the local townsfolk. They would tell me to shut up and make sure I flushed before I left. Never once did I wash my hands like the signs demanded. So here I am, dirty handed and telling my tales. Wanna hear one?

How a Yellow Crayon Became My Muse – About “Dandelion Yellow”
By Erin Sweet Al-Mehairi, author of Breathe. Breathe. and #marketingmorsels host on The Mando Method podcast of Project Entertainment Network (PEN). “Dandelion Yellow” is featured in the My Favorite Story Anthology of PEN. “Dandelion Yellow” has been a fan and peer favorite since my collection Breathe. Breathe. published from Unnerving in October of 2017. It’s actually a sad story, but it’s origins weren’t set up that way initially. When Crayola announced early in 2017 that they would be retiring the color Dandelion Yellow in place of a new blue color, I was distraught. (Yeah, yeah – I like my crayons, okay!) I like the yellow for the balance it carries between hope and healing coupled with loss and loneliness. I wondered in my head about a story featuring a little girl who is driven mad by the loss of the crayon. As I started working on it, and the story presented its layers, I saw that there was much more to it than just the loss of a crayon. As with yellow, the dandelion is a beautiful vision, and yet also a weed that people abuse. It’s a vibrant flower that quickly blows its seeds far into the wind if left to maturity, and wishes scattered that often don’t come true, and yet, still rejuvenates each year. As I thought of the dandelion and the color, and this little girl crying out in my head to be put onto the page, I channeled some of my writing inspirations as well. My pen planted nuggets of characterization and setting I’d admired from the early works of V.C. Andrews, and as well, crafted an ode to Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s The Yellow Wallpaper, drawing on themes of isolation and madness. It didn’t take much for this story to come flowing out of me. It took most of one afternoon in a coffee shop, ironically dressed in my The Mando Method t-shirt. A few more hours of work on the ending a couple of days later and some editing wrapped it for me. It seemed to tell itself. I wouldn’t have thought that one little yellow crayon would have so impact on my life as a writer this year, but most of all after reading this piece, I hope readers become aware of children and people in abuse and domestic captivity situations. It’s my favorite story because it’s a nightmare, but also because it shows resilience through trauma. *** Here are some things others had to say about it: “The yellow crayon story is one of the best short stories I have ever read! It has the perfect twist and it punches you right in the feels.” -Cedar Hollow Reviews "I loved Dandelion Yellow. I was hyperventilating at the end, but it was such a beautiful, painful and artful tale. I'll be saying that last line to myself for weeks at least. Just beautiful.” – Somer Canon, author of The Killer Chronicles “I truly loved this story, I felt it was perfectly paced, I loved the details and I personally found this the best example of Al-Mehairi's talent, as it perfectly described to me what it feels like to be trapped in a terrible situation and how you will do anything to make it better. I felt the characterization was spot on, the personality of the protagonist was excellently done - it is never easy to write child main characters - and I felt the power of this tale as its harrowing ending came to a close.” – Selcouth Station Erin Sweet Al-Mehairi, Biography – Erin Sweet Al-Mehairi has Bachelor of Arts degrees in English, Journalism, and History.
