âU-Um, Leilana?â Leilana glanced up, finding the girl with lavender hair reaching the middle of her back, her bangs covering her forehead, nearly reaching her cerulean eyes. Her cheeks were coated pink, rivaling the shade of her knee-length dress. âThere arenât, um⦠thereâs only a few of us left. Do you want to pair up?â
âSure thing, uhâ¦â Leilana glanced up at the sky in thought before holding up a finger in realization. âItâs Amelia, right?â
âAmiria,â she corrected sharply, her face reddening more at the affliction of her voice. Sure, the pronunciation had its similarities, but the syllables differed. And that passion of wanting her name to stick was working its wonders in Leilanaâs mind. âAmiria Farone.â
âSorry, sorry,â Leilana interjected, waving a hand in dismissal. âDidnât mean to upset you.â
âO-Oh!â Amiria held up both hands and took a step back from Leilana, trembling a bit. âItâs fine, you didnât! I-Iâm sorry if I made it seem like I was angry, Iâm really not, I promise-â
âHey now, Amiria, no need to be so scared.â Kindall wrapped an arm around the girlâs shoulders, smirking. âLei doesnât bite, not usually.â Amiria held her arms behind her back and turned her head to keep from looking him in the eye.
âItâs Leilana,â Leilana said abruptly. âNot Lei, not Leila, it is Leilana. Live it, learn it, love it.â
Kindall raised an eyebrow at her words as he set Amiria free and allowed her to run off towards Hinju to prepare for her own duel. âGeez, no need to be so crabby. It was just a little fun with friends.â
âWe arenât friends, Kindall.â He jumped back at the proclamation. âWeâre students at the same school fighting for the same goal. That doesnât make us friends, does it?â
âWell, I, uh⦠I guess notâ¦? But donât you think itâs better for everyone that we tried to get along and be friends? Youâre right, weâre all fighting for the same goal. Some of us are going to be Warlords someday, and we can all support each other until we get there. Right?â Leilana pondered his words before she cleared her throat.
ââ¦Iâm sorry. Iâve got a match.â She stepped past him, and Kindall stared at her back a moment longer before sighing, reclaiming his spot on one of the logs.
âYou really are just a kid after all,â Kindall mumbled.
Leilana stood opposite Amiria, revealing her grimoire for her opponent to view. Amiria clutched the silver flute in her hands for dear life but kept her attention on the girl and even managed to narrow her eyes to try and stir up some intimidation.
âCome to think of it,â Lancett whispered to Kindall, âIâve never seen Amiria fight before. She doesnât seem like sheâd hurt a fly.â
âNo, she doesnât,â Kindall replied, retaining focus on the two. âBut Amiria has skills that a lot of people donât understand.â
âBegin!â
Leilana rapidly flipped through the pages of her grimoire and an array of fireballs shot out at the girl. Amiria put the flute up to her lips and closed her eyes, playing out a small melody on the instrument before reflecting the magic back in Leilanaâs direction. Leilana side-stepped out of the way, her eyes darting between the singed grass and Amiria herself, who was starting up another melody on her flute. She scoffed before flipping through the grimoire, stopping on a page, mumbling a scripture.
From the book, a pair of teeming hands cloaked in shadows emerged, grabbing the flute from Amiriaâs grasp and snapping it in half before her very eyes. Amiria blinked away the tears starting up as she stared at her destroyed instrument, collecting the fractured pieces. With each passing second, her eyes grew dark and clouded. Leilana outstretched her right palm, sending the hands propelling towards her. Before they could reach her, Amiria inhaled deeply and closed her eyes, belting out a single high note in a pitch of middle C.
The single note, prolonged over several seconds, caused the hands to shatter away. Leilana froze as the note progressed, the ground around her beginning to tremble before giving way under her. She let out a shriek as the chasm opened, reaching out a hand as she fell. Amiria gasped when she realized what was occurring, covering her mouth with both hands.
âLeilana!â Lancett raced forward, sliding on his side as he ran, grabbing her by the arm. Several other students rushed to his aide, helping the girl out of the chasm. Leilana laid a hand on her chest, finding it difficult to regain herself, her frame quivering from shock. Lancett gently placed both hands on her shoulders, forcing her to face him. âAre you all right?â
âY-Yeah, just⦠just a little shaken upâ¦â
He bowed his head, hands still on her shoulders, sighing heavily. âGood. Iâm glad.â Hinju was still in a bit of shock himself, his gaze reflected on Amiria now, who continued to put the pieces together in her mind about what she had done. After coming to his senses, he held up his staff, moving stalagmites of the earth back into place to mend the open crater, sealing it shut.
âI-I⦠I am so sorry, Leilana!â Amiria choked out, taking one step back after another. âI-I donât⦠I donât know what happened, I justâ¦! Iâm sorry!â
âItâs okay,â Leilana replied softly. âIâm not dead or anything.â
âB-But-â
âHey, donât beat yourself up over it,â she interjected, âDonât worry. Iâm fine. I promise.â Leilana heaved a sigh. âOkay, maybe not completely true, Iâm a little bummed that I lost so terribly, and so fast. After all that work I put into learning the concepts of the Lasetteâ¦â

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo Grab book 1 – SINK – for FREE! -- EXCERPT: ”And if you’d acted before you did, defied your mother and refused her order to kill him, do you believe you could’ve won?” “Honestly? I don’t know. It doesn’t matter. For all we know we could’ve stopped it long before Gene. Aunt Margaret just kept telling us to be patient, that the catalyst would show itself. We rallied against my mother more because Pauline was in danger, not so much because of Eddie. To me, that was the ultimate incentive to proceed. Seeing her in danger was the reason we stood so strong together.” “Maybe your aunt knew a human wasn’t a strong enough reason to fight such an epic war. I mean, you might’ve rallied behind Gene, but could you say the others in your resistance would? With everything Gilcrest has told you, you’ve got magic in you, Fawna. You stood a chance against your mother. Your aunt probably knew that.” “You may be right, but it doesn’t matter. I’ve committed some terrible atrocities.” “Because you were scared! You didn’t have a choice. I wasn’t even here and I can see that.” He clanged his knuckles against the cast iron frame of the cauldron. “You said you wanted to give this old heirloom a second chance, an opportunity to be used for good. Why can’t you give yourself that chance? Cut yourself a break.” A smile cracked on my lips, and I shook my head in exasperation. “Why is it you always insist on seeing the good in me, even now when there’s none to be found?” “There’s plenty of good in you, Fawna. If there wasn’t, you wouldn’t be so ready to risk your soul to rescue the ones you love the most.” “There’s no talking any sense into you, is there?” I wrapped my arms around his torso, using his weight to anchor myself in place. “Not a chance,” he grinned, planting a sweet kiss on my cheek. “I’m not going anywhere. It’s like I said before, Queen, my heart is yours and only yours. The sea is in my blood, always has been. Now I know why. I was meant for this life, down here with you and Sebastian. Don’t take it away from me because of a past you can’t outrun.”

While the King busies himself searching out and destroying unregistered sorcerers, the rebels are gathering their forces. But the prophecy calls for three others: a rebel agent is sent to Denver to find Tyler Martin, Alex Scott, and Max Harrison and bring them back to Sarenia. Excerpt
Something rustles in the dense tangle of trees and brush to Tylerâs left. A whisperâbarely louder than the quiet murmur of the windâsnakes its way across the surface of his mind. Tyler turns toward the noise, body stiff and ready to move. Another noise, to his right. The whisper skims through his thoughts again, and this time he catches a word:
ââ¦daylightâ¦â
Tyler gets to his feet and slings the backpack onto his back, staring deep into the tangle of woods, trying to see past the shadows of undergrowth.
ââ¦should not be awake!â
Tyler almost jumps out of his skin. Where is that voice coming from? It doesnât seem to be from any particular directionâand something in his gut says heâs not hearing it aloud. Tyler takes a step backward, hardly daring breath. What is this thing, and what does it want with him?
ââ¦not welcome here.â
The brush in front of him starts to move, and doesnât stop. Somethingâs coming towards him.
ââ¦is for creatures of darkness.â
The voice is growing louder. Tyler takes a few more steps backwards, still wondering what the hellâs after him. Or if heâs just going crazy.
âYou should be sleepingâ¦of darkness. You are notâ¦night is for thoseâ¦â
The murmur grows into a whirlwind, chasing his own thoughts around in circles through his head. A single voice rises above the wind, in an icy moment of clarity:
âThe day is for creatures of daylight.
The night is for those of darkness.
You are not of the darkness.
You are not welcome here.â
He has to get out of here.

Why I Write Books
When I was a kid, I was always looking for the perfect book.
And it had to be perfect. If I found even one little thing I didn't like about it, it didn't qualify. Granted, I still liked most of the books I read, but none of them were good enough to stop my search.
Eventually I started to realize, after reading so many and knowing how many books actually existed in the world, that I likely wouldn't be able to find it. None of them were flawless, none of them contained all of the elements I wanted, and none of them were quite what I had in mind. So, I decided, the only thing I could to do solve this problem was write the perfect book myself. I was maybe twelve or thirteen, and writing the perfect book became my life goal.
Even with all the years of practice I've had, I'm still nowhere close to being able to write a perfect book. But I've come to realize that no book is perfect, but lots of them are good enough. All those books I went through before and liked, but that weren't perfect, were still valuable in different ways. Every book has strengths and weaknesses, plots or worlds or characters that may or may not be better than the others.
And that's my new goal: I don't want to write a perfect book anymore. I want to write lots of books, and I want to make them good enough for my readers.
