Review:
This story was full of emotions, mystery, suspense, and a hot cowboy. Emma … man, what do I say about her? I loved Emma! This girl had her heart broken before she was able to truly live, which hardened her against ever falling for a man. When she holds a grudge, she REALLY holds a grudge. I understand where she was coming from, though. When you have your mind and heart set on something (especially your heart), when things finally start to come together and you feel like you are so close to all your dreams coming true … then someone throws a bucket of ice water on you… yeah, years of therapy would be needed to overcome such a slap of reality. Nevertheless, she was a strong, determined, and a compassionate character. Braz is Emma’s bad guy, the man who broke her heart, but he isn’t bad. Emma’s expectations were too high. Braz is actually a caring individual who was manipulated into a situation that he ended up making the best of. His life was a hard road, full of life’s bumps of heartbreak, disappointment, but also the best kind of love—his daughter. He is a hardworking man, trying to be the best parent he can be while turning his life into something better. The suspense and mystery don’t end with this book. This little teaser is just the beginning of something bigger going on. Toward the ending, some of the pieces come together and we have a few heart-stopping moments when the villain shows their true colors. This was a great start to a series that is sure to have many surprises along the way. Totally a recommended read.

Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo -- Are you a book bloggers? -- EXCERPT: Sam brought his chair down with a soft thump as it hit the patio paver but he didn’t say anything for another long moment. “Anna Carmen was my best friend. She helped me through a hard time—she helped me see what I couldn’t then.” Cici’s lip trembled as she lifted her teacup. “I miss her, too. So much. Yesterday . . . it all came bubbling back up.” Sam’s hand settled on Cici’s shoulder in that gesture of comfort she’d come to depend on. “I know you do. And, yeah, I figured it would.” Jaycee sidled up to their table and settled Sam’s large glass of iced tea on the table. Condensation formed on the glass, dripping down to wet the white napkin beneath it. “I thought of something,” the girl said. Both Cici and Sam turned their faces up to the teenager. “Mr. Johnson told me one time he was meeting someone about a case.” Her brow wrinkled for a moment before she shrugged. “Does that help?” Sam tugged at his short ponytail. “Maybe. Thanks, Jaycee.” “Sure.” The girl skittered off to greet some new patrons. “You think you know what the case is, don’t you?” Cici asked, pouring more tea into her cup.

Review:
I don’t know what to label this book. It’s mostly a contemporary romance. However, there are metaphysical aspects to it that could place it under the paranormal category. I loved Luna. She was such a sweet person, just starting out on life away from home, having her first experiences in college. But, she was haunted nightly by reoccurring nightmares. And those nightmares got more concentrated, to the point where the woman in her nightmares haunted her daily life. The choice she made near the end … I think I would have done the same thing. She didn’t know who she was anymore, and anyone in her situation would question the same things. I felt for Clay, I really did. His past was so heartbreaking. He had a true love, one for the ages, but she fell into a downward spiral of depression and couldn’t see her way out of it. Honestly, I didn’t understand where a lot of her anger toward Clay came from. Regardless, back to Clay, a lot of what he did in the story made me not like him very much. He was hot and cold, running more cold than anything. When everything comes together in the end, the overall story is really beautiful. Second chances, true love, the afterlife, fixing your mistakes and redeeming yourself. It’s an amazing idea that I know I hope is true.

Title: A Change of Pace
Series: Northern Lights Collection
Stand alone
Author: Freya Barker
Genre: Contemporary Romance
Once a man who lived by the letter of the law.
Newt Tobias will do anything for his little girl. Even take early retirement, sell his city home, and move to cottage country, hoping that the simpler life will provide a better balance for his troubled teenage daughter.
Yet, not long after they’ve settled, he finds himself toe-to-toe with a stubborn, fiery tempered woman with pretty brown eyes.
Once a recluse preferring to live alone.
Working with troubled adolescents, Frederique Marchand doesn’t suffer fools and won’t put up with bullies. Especially handsome strangers like Newt who think they can run roughshod over her. She loves her work, but on her own time she much prefers the company of her menagerie of animals.
But with the welfare of a teenager at stake, she must put aside rocky first impressions and work with a man who needs her as much as she’ll come to need him.
"How was school?"
"Fine." It's the same answer Millie gave me yesterday and it doesn't tell me anything. I read somewhere once that when a woman says 'fine,' it means she's everything but. "Anything exciting?" I try again, which earns me an eye-roll, and I turn my eyes back to the road. "Actually," she suddenly says, surprising me. "I met a dog today." "At school?" I'm confused; I didn't know they let dogs in the school. "Yeah. Dad, can we get a dog?" "Wait. Is that even allowed? Bringing a dog into school?" "I guess so. He's some kind of service dog. But, Dad, can we have a dog?" "What—like a Seeing Eye dog?" "No, he belonged to a therapist visiting the school. So can we?" "You saw a therapist?" "It was just some kind of welcome thing they do with new kids." "That's pretty neat." "Whatever, it wasn't a big deal. Can we pick up a donut at Tim Hortons?" she asks, changing tracks at lightning speed. We're coming up to Nobel and Timmies is just down the road. "I just really liked the dog. So?" "Sure, we can." The screaming that follows almost has me running the damn Jeep off the road. "Yes! Thanks so much, Dad," she says with more enthusiasm than I've heard her express in the past four years. "Can we get one this weekend?" Now I'm confused. Does she not want me to stop now? "You want your donut this weekend?" "Donut I want now." She turns to me with big wide innocent eyes. "But we can shop for the dog this weekend?" Wait. What?
Freya Barker inspires with her stories about 'real’ people, perhaps less than perfect, each struggling to find their own slice of happy. She is the author of the Cedar Tree Series and the Portland, ME, novels.
Freya is the recipient of the RomCon “Reader’s Choice” Award for best first book, “Slim To None,” and is a finalist for the 2016 Kindle Book Awards for “From Dust”. She currently has two complete series and three anthologies published, and is working on two new series; La Plata County FBI—ROCK POINT, and Northern Lights. She continues to spin story after story with an endless supply of bruised and dented characters, vying for attention!

When her world gets rocked by unexpected news, she’s left more torn than ever. Can the two try to love again or is already it too late?
Tick.
Crinkle.
Slurp.
Crunch.
This was the soundtrack to my morning.
Every morning.
Bryson sat across the kitchen table from me, one hand gripping the morning paper, while the other alternated between holding his steaming mug of coffee or bringing his dry wheat toast from the plate to his mouth.
The clock on the wall counted down the seconds until we’d both need to leave for work, and this awkward routine ended.
Crunch.
Slurp.
Crinkle.
Or maybe it was just me who felt the awkwardness. Bryson seemed perfectly content to quietly work on his breakfast while I watched the second-hand tick away the time until I could make my escape.
The sky outside was gray, the oatmeal in my bowl was gray, the walls of this kitchen were painted gray. I looked down to my gray pencil skirt and white blouse. When did everything in my life become so monochromatic? When did all the color leech out of our days?
“Did you sleep well?” I asked him, finally unable to handle the weight of the silence between us.
“Mmm,” he intoned mid-sip, “like a baby.”
The flinch was involuntary.
I didn’t blame Bryson for his slip of the tongue. Even after all this time, it was still hard for him to grasp how that word affected me. How a simple four-letter word had ruled my life for so long. How I hated it as much as I yearned for it.
“How’s work been?” I tried again to engage him.
His mouth was full of toast and his eyes still roamed the paper in his hand when he responded. “Good, good. Everything’s going well.”
I sighed, and slid my spoon through my oatmeal, digging a hole in the center of the bowl that I wished was big enough for me to crawl into. It didn’t surprise me that Bryson hadn’t reciprocated my questions. He hadn’t asked me how I was doing in months. I suppose after getting the same answer over and over, he finally stopped asking.
Because my answer was always “fine” although we both knew I was far from it. So, if we both knew what my answer would be, and we both knew it was a lie, why bother, right?
That was Bryson’s mentality at least. I, on the other hand, couldn’t stand the silence that stacked up between us, like massive Lego blocks that interlocked and grew until that was all we could see.
And what color were those blocks? If you guessed “gray”, you’d be right.

Heather MacKinnon is an author living in the research triangle in North Carolina with her husband and two troublemaking dogs. She grew up on Long Island and spent her young adult years in various states in New England. This led to her subsequent addiction to Dunkin’ Donuts latte’s and her gratuitous use of the word “wicked”. She’s tried her hand at many jobs throughout the years as she strove to find the one that made her happy. Heather has sold chicken, kitchen knives, auto body supplies, PR packages, and computer software. She’s been a cashier, a waitress, a cook, a hotel concierge, a phlebotomist, and an Uber driver. Though her jobs have been many, her passion has always been reading. She’d hide in the bathroom and read between sales calls, or find a lonely corner in the kitchen and whip out her kindle between waiting on tables. After a lifetime of enjoying other people’s words, she decided to write down some of her own.
It should have just been a simple vacation, away from everyone and everything to clear my head. But I soon realized I wasn’t alone. He stalked me, hunted me. I should’ve run faster, tried harder. But the truth was I liked him chasing me. Wolf was a ruthless man, his way of living barbaric. Now he had me in his off-the-grid cabin, what he deemed my new home. I was his new wife, would have his babies. I was his irrevocably. I shouldn’t have felt arousal. But I did. He’s not going to let me escape ... but then again, maybe I don’t want to. Warning: This one has bite to it—even if it’s NOT paranormal! As per the usual ... it’s short and fast, pretty unrealistic, but it gets right down to the juicy bits. It’s one of those stories that will have you wanting to find your own Wolf in the woods. Review: The Wolf’s Captive was a short, hot, steamy read that gets down to the action. I really enjoyed the relationship between Wolf and Ruby. He was everything an alpha should be and just what Ruby needed! This was a novella-sized book, so I can’t say much without giving the whole plot away. Just know that if you need an escape from reality, this is an excellent choice! Can’t wait for the next book! 5 Stars! Excerpt: I felt like a fiend for him, like my body wasn’t my own, like I just needed to give every single part of myself over to him. It was insane, maybe even delusional, but I wanted it more than I’d ever wanted anything before. He stood and kept his back toward me. I licked my lips, my pulse thundering so loud I wondered if he heard. Then I found myself moving closer to him until I could have reached out and touched his back. I saw the way he tensed and wondered if he knew how close I was to him. “I can’t let you go,” he said in a gruff voice, his back still to me. He turned around then, the shadows dancing off his face, his body seeming even bigger than before. “I wanted you as mine since I first saw you. Now that you’re here the thought of you leaving isn’t something I’ll allow to happen.” He took a step forward. I found myself moving one back. My heart was racing and I started breathing faster and harder. The air in the room became thick, almost suffocating. It was like honey covering my body, coating me. He moved another step toward me, his massive body dwarfing mine, his scent making me feel drunk. “W-What?” My voice came out soft, that loan word a stutter. Oh, I understood exactly what he said but he spoke the words with such conviction, such determination that I felt them in every part of my body. “You heard me.” “I have a home, a job.” Although the very thought of those things in this moment, standing before Wolf, seemed distant and unimportant. Hell, they seemed that way even before I’d been in this situation. His expression was fierce, almost stern. He stared into my eyes, the dark depths of his heating me like a fire burning deep within my belly. “Materialistic things.” He said those two words in a gruff voice and took another step toward me. “Life isn’t about what we have, but about what we accomplish.” He lifted his hand and gently wrapped his fingers around my throat, his palm so much bigger than my neck. “Connections with that one person who owns every part of you, creating a family with them…” His voice had gone done an octave. “Those are what’s important. That is what life is about.” I swallowed, feeling that light pressure of his hand, knowing my nipples were hard and my pussy had become wet. It was all because of that touch. It was all because of him. “Nothing else matters aside from you with me, Ruby. You are mine.” And then he leaned in close and placed his mouth on mine, devouring me as he slipped his tongue between my lips and fucked me there. About the Author:

Review:
This book was written differently than what I’m used to. It was hard to get into at first because of it. However, the social issues in this book made it worth the read. Expectations, stereotypes, putting people down because of what they look on the outside, seeing them for who they are on the inside. Linc was a really great character. There were so many elements to him. He didn’t always say the right things, but that’s human nature. In the end, he made this book. His and Alexis’s relationship development felt more real than what I read in most books. There was a lot of work moving forward, no easy love-at-first sight. Alexis was plagued by her own self-doubt for that. Again, the social issues made this book worth the read. It’s eye-opening.
