Coke Solomon has lived a full life. He’s a retired army drill sergeant, so he is more than used to getting his way. And if he can’t have it his way? Well, let’s just say that’s never happened before… At least not until Cora Maldonado walks into his life, demanding he fall in line, or she’ll find a way to make his life hell. He finds out fast that Cora marches to the beat of her own drum, and a lot of times that drum takes her farther away rather than closer to where he feels she needs to be. He can’t stand it. He wants her, and he has to have her. It doesn’t matter that she’s twenty years younger than him, and has a father that would rather see him dead than have his baby girl anywhere near him. Nor does it matter that his ex-wife is highly offended that she’s been replaced with a much younger woman. Despite the odds stacking against them, he’ll fight for what he wants. His ex-wife, her father, and their age difference be damned.

Review:
Ain’t Doin’ It is the fourth installment of The Simple Man Series, and I’m seriously enjoying it. Lani Lynn Vale’s books are like coming home. Her characters are everyday people who have some pretty crazy things happen to them. I was also born and raised in East Texas, so it’s literally like going home each time I open a book. I love how she’s interweaving her previous series’ into this one. We’ve got some Dixie Wardens mixed with some Freebirds. Cora is the daughter of one of the Freebirds, and we get cameo appearances from them. Cora is young, but I think because of her medical condition she’s more mature. We met Coke in the previous book, and we see he’s not really a people person. He’s older, but the age difference isn’t too bad. He had his daughter early, so he’s still in his thirties while the daughter is in her late teens. He also has a nightmare of an ex-wife, but their daughter is more like him than her. Cora isn’t a people person either and barely tolerates the friends she does have. She’s a graphic artist, illustrator, and artist. This is her mode of expression and sometimes communication. So, they fit each other pretty perfectly. If you love books that have a little bit of everything— drama, humor, steam, and suspense—this book is for you! 5 Stars
