I Blackmailed Her Brother
-- EXCERPT: I reach into my pocket and wave a USB in his face. It’s a physical backup I use whenever I’m on the road and Wi-Fi isn’t viable. One of the first things Gemma taught me was to back up everything. Currently, it just has some random files on it, but Wally doesn’t know that. He eyes the USB nervously. “What’s on that?” “It has photos of your arrest, as well as police reports on the drugs you were caught with.” He blanches and sweat beads over his forehead. “Look, I don’t want to have to do this. Just give us the keycard to room 704, and we’ll be in and out in less than a few minutes.” “I’ll get fired,” he whines, his voice piercing louder. I wince, glancing around us, but no one appears to be paying us much attention. Yet. “You won’t be. No one will know what’s happening. Gemma and I will look like two lovers going up to our room, and we’ll exit without anyone knowing we were there.” He shakes his head, but it looks more defeated than opposing. “I can’t fucking believe you. I won’t ever forgive you or her. She is dead to me,” he snaps while stabbing the keyboard in front of him angrily. My stomach drops, and my lungs compact, making it harder to catch my breath. “Please don’t be angry at her. She has no idea I’m doing this,” I beg quietly. Wally does tend to exaggerate in most things. His admission the first time I met him that he would die if the snow didn’t let up soon comes to mind. But Wally also loves to create drama. Often, he orchestrates arguments at family dinners purely for his own amusement. I can totally see him wanting revenge for this, and what better way than to make Scarlett’s life miserable by taunting her over what I have done. “I don’t give a fuck if she knows what you’re doing,” he hisses as he slaps the keycard on the counter, his stare cold enough to give me frostbite. “You have fifteen minutes before the room is occupied.” “Thank you,” I tell him, hoping my pleading tone gains me some sort of sympathy, or at least forgiveness. He doesn’t glance back up at me again. I like Scarlett a lot. How is she going to react to what just happened? How the hell is she going to forgive me for how I threatened her brother? Will she understand? Or hate me? I did this all for the right reasons, didn’t I? I had no choice, not without disappointing Zander. I need to prove to everyone that I am up for this. That becoming a private investigator isn’t a mistake. But, did I take it too far?

“You want me to do what?” Irritated, I grab a water from the mini-fridge, take a swig, and slam the bottle down on the table in the middle of the living room of the hotel suite I’m in. “You’re fucking crazy, Jock,” I sneer. “It wasn’t my idea, Graham,” he replies, unfazed by my outburst as he sits quietly on the sofa. “I told you the added stipulation in the new contract the Comets are offering was completely new to me too.” “It’s fucking loco is what it is,” I grumble. It’s true. This latest development in contract negotiations is truly nuts. They want me to pretend to have a fake girlfriend. Are they off their rockers? “How’s this even supposed to work?” I ask. “We’re hammering out the details.” “Great. Do I at least get to meet this mystery woman before I sign?” “No. There’s no time for that. You will meet her, though, before the season begins.” “Whatever,” I huff. “I can’t believe I’m supposed to pretend to be dating a girl I’ve never even seen. To top it off, I get to meet her just once, then I’m expected to act as if we’re in a serious relationship.” “Pretty much,” Jock confirms. This is bad, but there’s something more I’m struggling with—I’m supposed to also fucking move in with this pretend girlfriend. Could it get any worse?

Title: Hacked Hearts
Author: Jade Webb
Genre: Romantic Comedy
Published: December 12, 2018
“Hacked Hearts give you intrigue and such a sweet romance!” ~ The Red Hatter Book Blog “... filled with action, suspense, humor, romance, and is an emotional roller coaster throughout.” ~ Wendy’s Book Blog “... a smooth perfect balance between suspense and romance.” ~ Goodreads Review
A ten million dollar problem.
There’s a bounty on her head and some really shady people are hoping for a big payout when they find her.
The only problem is she has no idea who wants her, or why.
So she enlists the help of the one person in this world who can help her: Diego Medina, journalist wonderkin and notorious playboy. And when he chooses to ignore her pleas for help, Mia resorts to … a more creative Plan B. After all, desperate times call for desperate measures, right?
But the one thing Mia didn’t realize is that by hacking her way into Diego’s life, she also may have hacked her way into his heart.
“I didn’t seduce you. I was trying to get your attention, since you ignored my text!”
“And you thought showing me your tits would do it?” “Well, it worked, didn’t it?” she shoots back.
I’m silent for a moment, because she’s right. It did work. I don’t even have the mental bandwidth to try to dissect what that says about me as a person. Likely nothing good.
“What do you want from me?” I finally ask.
“Really? How can I simplify this even more?” she asks, her voice laced with obvious irritation. “Ten-million-dollar bounty on my head. I need you to figure out who the hell wants me and why. Your father was obsessed with this case. I know he kept detailed notes. Maybe there’s something in his notes that will lead us to figure out who the hell wants me so badly.”
Her mention of my father and his obsession strikes a nerve, and I feel my blood chill. I harden my voice. “Okay, hold on one second. First of all, there is no ‘us.’ And second, why not go to the police if you’re so concerned about this?”
She laughs, but it’s hollow, and there’s a hint of her voice trembling beneath her false bravado. “The police can’t do anything and will only force me back outside. I’m safer where I am, but I know I’m running out of time. Ten million dollars is a lot of money, and all I can do is try to run the clock out.”
Though I can tell she’s trying to fight it, the sadness and helplessness is clear in her words, and it hits me on a cellular level. She’s terrified. And while I want to blow her off, to tell her to leave me the hell alone, I can’t, though I’m not sure why. Because yes, she gave me one of the best orgasms of my life without even being in the same room, but there’s still something else. I feel drawn to helping her—maybe because of the fear in her voice, or my need to figure out what it is about her that seems to wake something inside me.
She lets out a long breath. “Look, I know you hate me. I know you probably blame me—or my father—for your dad becoming so obsessed with the case and eventually...” she trails off, not daring to say what we’ve all been too scared— too polite—to say out loud. “But I don’t have anyone else. I can’t leave my apartment. I can’t do this on my own. I need someone on the outside who knows the case and can help me. If I figure out who is ordering this, I might have a chance at surviving.”

I’m drawn to him in a way I can’t explain. There’s something about him, about the scent of his secrets that lures me in, tempting my most primal instincts. But he’s not destined for me, and what chance do I stand against fate?
Review:
I have mixed feelings about this book, so bear with me while I sort them out in this review. I believe this story has excellent bones, but some of the fine details made this hard to rate. I loved the angst of Clayton. I loved the premise of the story. Rya is a female wolf rejected by her fate/moon chosen mate, Clayton, and someone who is deemed valuable when she reaches her adulthood… just not by her mate. His human side chooses another wolf over her, and the circumstances around this situation are horrific. I won’t spoil that much for y’all. What bothered me was I spent the whole book wondering why it was called Clayton or the Wildflowers Series. I didn’t understand what it meant to be moon touched and why it was deemed valuable till somewhat late in the game. And still, why was this important to a pack? Also, the packs weren’t named, so they were basically identified by whose pack it was… I wanted more explanations on how their world worked. I liked that it was different than every other PNR Shifter book that I’ve read. I just wanted some clarity on some aspects of it. Now, I loved Dallas but felt he did this drastic change when he accepted some aspects of himself (don’t want to spoil it). He wasn’t the blushing guy who had a crush on the girl. I wasn’t eased into his change. Rya was such a strong character. I loved her and her resiliency. I really wanted her to stand up for herself with Clayton though. I wanted her to have some snappy, sassy comebacks to his awfulness. Overall, I couldn’t put this book down because I wanted to know what happened next, but the devil is in the details—those killed me. Also, the ending left me wanting… there is no resolution because we’re left off on a cliffhanger. Had I realized there was one, I probably wouldn’t have picked this book up, but I’m glad I did. It’s a unique and angsty read. This book had a real Charlaine Harris feel/tone that I really enjoyed. The author has a really great voice. 3.5 to 4 Stars “Clayton is so different from the PNR out there nowadays, and I loved it!” - Red Hatter Book Blog “Clayton is a steamy, hot, dark pararomance.” - Rose (Goodreads) “I suggest everyone take a chance on this soul cleansing adventure.” - Goodreads Review

Can he prove to Neil that she can trust him before it’s too late?
He wasted no time and kissed me. His lips encouraged mine to move with his, and a delicate dance of lips and tongues ensued. My thoughts jumbled as I tried to decide what made the kiss so delicious, the sensual feeling of his lips on mine or the taste of him coupled with the concentrated smell of his designer cologne. Then, it didn’t matter, because I felt his thick thigh wedging in between my legs and all of his weight pushing against me.
Once my legs spread to accommodate him, the kiss went downright ferocious. His hands shoved into my hair and one gripped my locks hard. My hands went under his t-shirt to feel his abs, pecs and then roamed around to stroke his lats. Our tongues dueled brutally, and I got the impression that Razor was just as hungry for it as I was. I needed to get laid. It had been a damn long time, and I was capital-H Horny!
I heard loud clinking of glasses and muffled male laughter. It dawned on me that his room backed up to the bar area of the common room. If I could hear them, then it stood to reason that they would hear me if I got loud. I did not want to have an audience to this, even if it was only for the audible portion of what we were doing. Plus, Vamp and Jim’s words about Razor being a player came back to me. I wasn’t looking for a relationship, necessarily, but I also wasn’t going to be some kind of one-night stand for a pretty-boy player like Razor. I jerked my head away from him and his hands in my hair loosened.
“What?” he whispered.
After a long blink, I looked into his eyes and said, “I…we…we just can’t. Not—”
It was on the tip of my tongue to say ‘Not right now’, but the fact of the matter was that the two of us couldn’t do this at all. He was not my type. I was not up for being chewed up and spit out the way that good-looking men were prone to do. But as horny as I was, it was taking all of my willpower to restrain myself. I pushed against his shoulders to get him off of me, but he was damn heavy.
“Not what, Neil? Not here, not right now?” he asked and his voice was exceptionally husky.
“Not at all,” I said in a small voice.
His eyebrows drew together and his eyes narrowed. “‘Not at all?’ Why would you say that?”
I kept quiet.
His eyebrows shot up and he said, “You don’t seem like a tease, so why are you fighting this so hard?”
I opened my mouth to speak, but his finger pushed on my lips. “And don’t give me your bullshit line that I’m not your type of guy. You’re gorgeous, I’m semi-good-looking –”
My chin tipped up with my laughter at his outrageous statement. I stopped laughing and leveled my gaze on him again. His face had softened and if I didn’t know better, I’d say he looked like he was in awe. He couldn’t possibly be looking at me like that.
“I was wrong,” he whispered.
One of my eyebrows went up in question.
“You’re gorgeous always, but you belly-laughing is a sight to behold.”
Heat raced to my cheeks, so I pushed against his shoulders again with more oomph, but he still wouldn’t budge. “Get off of me, Romeo. We had dinner, it’s time for me to go.”
He shook his head and his weight became heavier on me. “Not until you tell me why.”
I was getting irritated and I blurted, “I’m not going to be just another notch for you.”
His eyes glittered at me. “People been feedin’ you shit about me.”
“Um, well, I hadn’t thought of it that way,” I whispered.
“Right. You aren’t a club whore, and you aren’t some chick who came to our party for a little sumpin’-sumpin’, Neil.”
I sighed, but he went on, “I’m a flirt. Hard not to be when I look like I do. So, yeah, I’ve had lots of ass and can usually work my way in with any chick I see. That gets me a rep that isn’t entirely true. So, we’ll stop, but you aren’t going just yet.”
“What are you talking about?”
“This wasn't ‘just dinner’, but I’m making you uncomfortable, so let’s go hang with the brothers.”

Ghosts are real. Well, technically speaking, maybe not. But the ones that haunt a man’s soul? Those are very real. So real, in fact, that there are times when Castiel would rather silence them forever in the worst way possible than to go on living with them haunting his every step. All it took was one single second in time for his attention to drift, and everything changed. Life as he once knew it, is over. Now he’s struggling to make sense of the pieces that are left, and he’s fairly sure at least half of them are missing. He’s living for three things now. His club—the Bear Bottom Guardians. His work as a police officer for Bear Bottom Police Department. And the occasional glimpse of a girl that makes his spirit feel free. Despite the ghosts that haunt him, he’s not willing to present them with another target. Which is why he has to stay away from her. He can’t touch her. He can’t talk to her. He can’t get anywhere near her. Not and live with himself afterward. The only problem is, Turner doesn’t care what Castiel wants. She also has a solution for his ghosts. You may call her Ms. Ghostbuster.
