"Maddox is the ultimate flawed Alpha hero. This book is the perfect mash-up of hot & sweet, romance & bromance. The gut-wrenching climax will have you gasping!" ~Christi Barth, author of Bad Boys Gone Good "There's a new book boyfriend on the block and his name is Maddox. Hands off ladies, he is all MINE." ~Eva LeNoir, author of UCC Saga series
Until one day, I was browsing my local bookstore for something new to read.
Studying a book jacket, I was distracted when a womanâs silhouette caught my attention. She was lissome and pretty, the sunlight catching her light red hair. She was reading the back of a book, her finger running over the spine. Something about her beckoned to me yet seemed familiar. With a grin, I realized it was Dee, and I approached her. âFind something good?â
She glanced at me, startled. I was close enough to see the flecks of brown in her wide green eyes. She smiled and slid the book back onto the shelf. âNot really.â She indicated the books I had in my hand. âI think youâve had better luck.â
âYou can borrow one if you like. I tend to buy in batches.â
She tilted her head, silently mouthing the titles. She looked up with a smile. âThat would be lovely.â
âI was gonna grab a cup of coffee. Can I interest you in joining me?â
âIâd love to.â
Seated across from her, I realized it was the first time weâd ever been alone.
âYou come here often?â
She shook her head with a wry grin. âIs that your best pick-up line, Maddox?â
I chuckled. âI donât think Iâve ever seen you in here until today.â
âI was in the office for a short while, then dropped in here. Usually I browse on my lunch hour.â
âThat makes sense.â
Silence fell as we sipped our coffee, but it wasnât uncomfortable. I noticed she nibbled at the end of her thumb, and it struck me as odd. Given her stoic persona, I found it rather endearing.
And I found my thoughts strange. Endearing wasnât a word I used oftenâif ever.
She met my gaze. âSo, is it?â
âIs it what?â
âIs that your best pick-up line?â
I studied her as I drank my coffee. âI donât typically do pick-up lines.â
She smirked. âIâm not surprised.â
âSorry?â
âWith that whole silver fox thing youâve got going, Iâm sure you donât have to.â
I frowned. âSilver fox?â
âMaddox, the silver fox. Young, sexy, wealthy, plus that premature gray? I bet you beat them off with a stick.â
I shook my head, amused at her thoughts. âIâm sorry to disappoint, but no.â
âReally? Iâm surprised.â
I sat back, crossing my legs, swinging one foot. âWhat about you, Deirdre? All prim and pretty. You drive the lawyers crazy at your firm?â
She laughed. âDee. No one calls me Deirdre. Itâs stuffy and formal.â
âNo. Itâs a lovely name for a lovely woman. It suits you. The lawyers you date donât call you by your full name?â
She ignored my comment about her name. âI donât date lawyers, or anyone else at my firm,â she stated firmly. âIn fact, I donât date.â
âEver?â
She hesitated, then shook her head. âNo. Love, romantic love, isnât for me.â
I took in a deep breath and spoke. âWhy is that?â
âItâs dangerous. It overwhelms and kills you.â
At my raised eyebrow, she continued.
âIâm not saying I donât see people. I haveâ¦needs. But I donât do romantic relationships. Iâve seen the way love destroys people.â She held up her hand before I could speak. âI know it works for some, but Iâm not built that way.â
I drained my coffee, then leaned forward. âNeither am I.â
She widened her eyes. âReally?â
âLove equals power. The power to destroy. The ability to hurt and cause pain. The chaos it causes. Thatâs what love means to me. It destroys trust and leaves you weak.â
âYou feel that way about everyone?â
âThere are a few exceptions. And I will never break them for a woman.â
Our eyes met, silent understanding passing between us. The air shifted, and I felt our mutual desire grow. It stretched out, pushing tentatively against the boundaries we had erected. She propped her elbow on the table, lifting her thumb to her mouth. Her small teeth gnawed at the flesh. It was an innocent gesture, yet I found it provocative.
âI have needs too,â I murmured. Reaching over, I tugged her thumb from her mouth, inspecting it. From the roughness of the skin, and the fact that it was the second time sheâd done it since we sat down, it was clearly a nervous habit for her. I slowly dragged my fingers across her palm, then laid her hand on the table.
Her breathing hitched. âIâm older than you are.â
âThree years,â I scoffed. âItâs nothing.â
âIâm serious. I donât do relationships.â
âNor do I.â I bent forward, lowering my voice. âMay I be blunt with you?â
âI prefer blunt.â
âI find you incredibly attractive, Deirdre. Very sexy in your buttoned-up clothes and calm exterior. Iâd like to see what happens when youâre naked and aroused.â I tilted my head, studying her. âLike nowâare you aware in the past few minutes, your breathing picked up and your eyes darkened? You have the loveliest color across your cheeks. Even the tips of your ears are pink. I wonder how far down I could make you flush that way.â
Her color deepened, but she didnât flinch. She shifted closer, our knees pressed together under the table. Her normally husky voice was even lower, turning me on. âYou want honest?â
I nodded.
âI think youâre one of the sexiest men Iâve ever met, Maddox. I see how your toned body moves when you walk, and I imagine you moving in me. You use your hands a lot when you talk, and I want to feel them on my skin. Your muscles flex under your expensive suits, and I want to feel them tighten under my touch.â She ran her finger over her lips. âI want to taste you and watch you fall apart.â
âThen maybe we should go and explore each other.â

Review:
Ain’t Doin’ It is the fourth installment of The Simple Man Series, and I’m seriously enjoying it. Lani Lynn Vale’s books are like coming home. Her characters are everyday people who have some pretty crazy things happen to them. I was also born and raised in East Texas, so it’s literally like going home each time I open a book. I love how she’s interweaving her previous series’ into this one. We’ve got some Dixie Wardens mixed with some Freebirds. Cora is the daughter of one of the Freebirds, and we get cameo appearances from them. Cora is young, but I think because of her medical condition she’s more mature. We met Coke in the previous book, and we see he’s not really a people person. He’s older, but the age difference isn’t too bad. He had his daughter early, so he’s still in his thirties while the daughter is in her late teens. He also has a nightmare of an ex-wife, but their daughter is more like him than her. Cora isn’t a people person either and barely tolerates the friends she does have. She’s a graphic artist, illustrator, and artist. This is her mode of expression and sometimes communication. So, they fit each other pretty perfectly. If you love books that have a little bit of everything— drama, humor, steam, and suspense—this book is for you! 5 Stars

Hart of Darkness
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo -- EXCERPT: I parked two blocks from a sea of red and blue flashing lights. I grabbed my bag, hopped out of my car, and ran up to the crowd that had gathered around. I sidled up to an older lady. “What’s going on?” She didn’t even look my way. Instead, she lifted up on her tiptoes to see over others’ heads. “Word is the cops are in a standoff with some gang.” My internal radar was firing on all cylinders. “What gang?” She clutched the robe she was wearing. “Not sure.” I plowed through the throng to get a better view. Some protested as I wiggled my way up to a man in blue, whose name read Miladin on his uniform shirt. I knew some cops but not him. Police cruisers and unmarked cars littered the street on the other side of the police barricade. I flashed my reporter credentials. “I’m here to see Detective Ted Hughes.” I scanned the men in blue and some in plain clothes. Ted was tall, lanky, and sometimes hard to miss with his thick mustache that was similar to the actor Tom Selleck’s. I did another once-over and spotted Rick. He wasn’t as tall as Ted, but he was husky, compliments of the gym he lived at during his off-duty hours. Officer Miladin narrowed his dark eyes. “Civilians are not allowed past this barrier.” “I work for the paper, so let me through.” I knew working as a reporter held no clout to get me into an active police scene, but most cops knew I was close to Ted. Officer Miladin stabbed a finger at another police barrier along the sidewalk in front of the brick homes that lined the street. “The media is over there.” I didn’t budge from my spot. “You’re new. Aren’t you?” Miladin’s voice dropped an octave. “I said over there.” I huffed and decided it wasn’t worth arguing. Ted would only kick me out anyway. I spotted Deidre, a news reporter for CBNT, a local station in the city. If anyone had a lead, it would be Deidre. She was relentless in her hunt to get the big story. I was about to make my way over to her, when a shot rang out through the humid night. People screamed and scattered. The cops took cover behind their vehicles. I managed to duck behind one of many cars parked along the curb. The lady in the robe joined me, breathing heavily, while the crowd scattered to take cover. Then silence ensued. I slowly peeked through the car window, when the lady in the robe nudged me. She pointed a red-painted nail toward the driveway of the house across from us. “Look.” A girl with bold red hair darted from the back of the house, setting off the motion sensor. Miladin, who had abandoned his position, edged along the base of the house and down the driveway. He said something into his radio, when the redhead climbed the chain-link fence. Considering the girl was running, I suspected the cops didn’t have the house completely surrounded. Or if they did, then their attention wasn’t on the girl. The crowd seemed to be holding its breath.
GIVEAWAY! In A Faraway Land: Billionaires in Disguise: Flicka by Blair Babylon ~ Release Blitz & Giveaway6/13/2018 In A Faraway Land: Billionaires in Disguise: Flicka
Goodreads / Amazon / Barnes & Noble / iBooks / Kobo -- EXCERPT: Princess Flicka von Hannover spun through the casino, taking orders and delivering drinks. Bastien the Swiss guy, again. He ordered a Weizenbier, as he alternated those with his top-shelf martinis, and Flicka typed it into her screen. Just as she was getting ready to wink at him and flounce off to her next ten-second interaction, Bastien glanced over her shoulder. His face stilled, and he didn’t move. She looked behind herself. Six men threaded through the crowd toward them. All wore dark suits. All were looking intently in her direction. The closest was on the other side of a blackjack table and rounding it fast. Flicka ran. Her tray crashed to the floor behind her. People hollered at the spill and noise. Dieter was at the table ahead of her, and she sprinted toward him. He looked up and was already sliding off the barstool seat as she got to him. He grabbed her arm as she passed, pushing her ahead of him, and they ran for the kitchen doors at the back as they had planned. Flicka risked a quick glance back. All of the black-suited men were chasing them, but they weren’t dodging through the crowd as quickly as she and Dieter were. They crashed through the swinging door and pounded down a hallway toward a door that led to another back hallway. When they reached it, Flicka slammed her palms against the crash bar, but it didn’t budge. She hit it again. Nothing. “It’s locked.” -- COMING July 31!

Title: Secrets
Series: Portentous Destiny Series #2
Author: S.E. Rose
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Release Date: June 12, 2018
On a quest to find her biological family, one woman discovers secrets more sinister than anything she could have imagined.
Adopted at three years old and raised in the United States, Lily Stevenson is taking the summer to research her past. She settles into a small Colombian village focused on uncovering her biological roots. What she doesn’t anticipate is losing her carefully guarded heart to sexy media mogul, Lance Cunningham. As the two embark on a journey to unveil the mystery of Lily’s origins, they unravel a dark past that bleeds into the present. What Lily thought was over is just beginning.
Can Lance break through a trust barrier she put up years before, or will the secrets being revealed pull them apart?
“Penny for your thoughts?” Lance says, looking at the list.
“I want to see if I can find Lorena and my grandparents. I can’t figure out why my grandparents wouldn’t have come looking for my mom at the hospital. She was only fifteen. It seems strange. I understand they were likely poor, I mean it’s not a great neighborhood. But still, something doesn’t seem right.” “Maybe they couldn’t, or they weren’t alive or maybe they were sick or moved? There could be a whole litany of reasons why. Maybe she ran away?” he brainstorms. “Well, we’re going to find out,” I say, feeling rather determined. He smiles and takes my hand in his. “I have no doubt you will. But regrettably, I will need to take you back soon,” he says as he looks at the clock on the wall. I nod and head upstairs to pack my things and shower. As I turn the faucet on and wait for the hot water, I feel Lance’s arms wrap around my waist and he pulls me against him. I can feel his hardness pressed against my back. I turn around and look up at him. He seems so much taller now as I stand naked in his arms. He grins, as though reading my mind, and in a true testament to his strength he very slowly pulls me up his body until our faces meet. I grin. “Better,” he murmurs against my lips. “Yes, much,” I whisper back as I wrap my legs around his waist. He walks us into the shower and holds me under the hot water, kissing me slowly. “I’m not sure I want to take you back this morning,” he murmurs in between kisses. “Me either,” I sigh as I press my forehead against his. “Do you think you could get more days off?” “Not right now. They don’t have any other volunteers,” I explain as he lowers me until my feet hit the warmed tiles. I talk about the staff or lack thereof as he washes my hair and body. I return the favor all while continuing to talk about the kids and my time volunteering. “You really love the kids, don’t you?” he asks with a smile. I laugh. “Most of the time. I guess I just understand them.” “I think I’m beginning to understand you,” he says, smiling as he brings his lips to mine. As he deepens our kiss, I feel my need for him blossom. I push myself against his hard frame, wrapping my arms around his neck and pulling him closer to me. “Lily, we aren’t going to finish here if you keep doing that,” he says against my lips. “I’m not on a schedule this morning,” I say, smiling back at him. I jump up and wrap my legs around him as his arms come around me tightly. I feel protected by him, safe in our embrace. He turns and leans us against the tile shower wall. I can feel his erection against my entrance and I thrust my hips against him. He smiles at me again. “I think I created a monster,” he says. I smirk at him. “I want what I want. What can I say?” “Oh really,” he says. “Greedy, are you?” “For you,” I whisper, feeling brave at the moment. He lifts me slightly and guides me down onto him. He makes love to me slowly, his lips never leaving mine. I get lost in our movements. I can feel his strength as his muscles strain and move against me.
